Healing
I've been offline from the blog for over 3 years, due to an attack of Life.
It's been a rough ride, but I'm healing.

Just a Foot
I felt like sketching yesterday. It was nice to get back to "just pencil" again.
(And yes, my arches are really that high.) *grin*

The "coloring rubric" and why it makes me sad...
I detest the idea that only one kind of coloring is "okay" and deserving of a smiley face. Just... NO.
Sometimes you *need* to color outside the lines, or use colors that don't "make sense", or leave a lot of white space. I believe this sort of "you must conform" attitude damages young artists and stunts their creativity.
I first saw it on Pinterest, and it made me so mad... Just say NO to the coloring rubric!

I love this veggie display! It's supposedly from Martha Stewart's blog, but I can't find the original post.
How Change Feels
I don't like change. I fight it, and kick and scream and resist with all my might.
I'm trying to get better about it, but this is how it feels to me:

The Toy Society
This looks awesome fun, and I can't wait to get started!
"The Toy Society spreads love throughout the streets of the world. Nothing to it really just a bunch of handmade toys looking for a nice home. What started as a small street art project in Australia is slowly spreading around the world."
I think I'm going to start with a felt scotty dog first. Wheee!

Yarn Acquired!
The 2011 Special Olympics USA Scarf Project is underway. This year's colors are Red Heart Super Saver #886 Blue and #512 Turquoise. I got my yarn today!
For more information on how to participate, here's a link: http://www.scarvesforspecialolympics.org/
I found the "FAQ" section to be very helpful.
I found the turquoise yarn easily at Michael's, but they didn't have the correct shade of blue. They had Royal and Navy, but not 886 Blue. WalMart had both colors, for a cheaper price. Bonus!
Click on "Project Guidelines" for details and free patterns. http://www.scarvesforspecialolympics.org/states
You can knit or crochet your scarves, and any pattern will do as long as you use both colors of yarn. I will be doing a double-strand crochet with a fat hook. It's easy, and it turns out nice and thick.
If you scroll down to the bottom of the Project Guidelines page, you can choose which state you want to help. It looks like this:

Each state has slightly different requirements for scarf size, number of scarves needed, and submission deadlines. You can support any state you like!
I'll be sending my scarves to the Northern California folks. Their goal is to collect approximately 1,150 scarves for athletes, coaches, volunteers and supporters. As of January 8, they only had 45 scarves. The California shipping deadline is February 25, so that gives me a few weeks to work my magic. :)
Happy stitching!

Winter Garden
I love having dirt under my nails!
We're off to a good start on our winter garden. So far we've planted celery, walla walla onions, elephant garlic, sweet peas, red cabbage, green cabbage, bok choy, parsley, and cauliflower. I also included pansies, nierembergia, and erysimum flowers. Here's a picture of the first bed:
The flimsy little rope "fence" is to discourage the dog from jumping in the box. So far it's working!
The second bed will have 4 kinds of lettuce, LOTS of spinach, green chard, rainbow chard, broccoli, and more flowers. That should be finished by today or tomorrow.

A Good Day to Play Hooky
Today we "shirked our responsibilities" and went to the beach. It was dreamy. The northern CA coast is lovely this time of year. No fog, nice sunny day, little wind. Going on a Thursday was extra bonus because the beach was nearly deserted. I had a fun time with Deborah, Amy, and Sharlet.
I think we broke the dog, though -- she ran more today than I think she has all year! I think she is less afraid of the waves now; perhaps swimming in the pond at camp helped that. She slept almost the whole way home.
I loved the sound of the waves crashing. I realized at the end of the day that one of the reasons I like it so much is because it cancels out my 4-tone tinnitus. I think it's the closest thing to "quiet" I'll ever get. I need more of that.
Today I tried to really just be "in the moment". I didn't take pictures or try to collect shells. I just reveled in the sounds and smells, the patterns of the water, the way the rocks made little dimples in the sand. I watched the waves crash, enjoyed the sky, and laughed at my silly dog trying to catch birds. I lay on the sand and listened to the melodious sound of the girls giggling mixed with the waves and the wind. I unplugged.
I walked on the beach alone with the dog for a long time, just exploring and talking to her. I let the girls fend for themselves with the food. I even forgot that I took some sewing to work on. I relaxed.
It was a good day. :)
